Apparently WTF (214) 279-0990 is a general nuisance.
So I did a bit of digging. The calls originate from an automated dialer, my guess is they just try phone numbers at random. That’s how they could reach your cell phone number, even if the number is unlisted or placed on the do-not-call list. And why would they care about the do-not-call list, they’re already in violation of FCC rules (47 CFR Sec. 64. 1200):
(a) No person may:
(1) Initiate any telephone call (other than a call made for
emergency purposes or made with the prior express consent of the called
party) using an automatic telephone dialing system or an artificial or
prerecorded voice,
…
(iii) To any telephone number assigned to a paging service, cellular
telephone service, specialized mobile radio service, or other radio
common carrier service, or any service for which the called party is
charged for the call;
So next step, I’m going to file a complaint with the FCC, and I’m going to include all the people who commented and complained about WTF (214) 279-0990. I’m also going to ask Verizon (my carrier) to block this company. Anyone wanting to help and file a complaint with their carrier?

Got missed call from that number

P.S. It leaves messages claiming I’ve “won” some vacation to Disney World for $99 per person (I can’t believe they can’t even make it sound like a good deal)… plus some kind of added trip to Vegas, I think. The automated system always leaves the same message on my voice mail.
Comment by Jamie — September 7, 2005 @ 6:16 pm
Apparently, according to Bell Canada, these calls from 214-279-0990 are just regular telemarketing, and not an attempt to steal anyone’s long distance time or personal information. See this page for more information: http://www.phonebusters.com/english/legal_2005_mar30.html
But, I do wonder why this company is not abiding by U.S. law regarding calling mobile phone numbers and do-not-call registry numbers. Strange and annoying.

I’ve been getting calls from this number at work. When I answer, no one is ever there. It’s very frustrating and time consuming. I work in a branch office for a very large, international company. I’ve asked our home office to look into it. Perhaps that will bring enough added pressure to get this stopped.
Comment by Betty — October 11, 2005 @ 2:07 pm
Just received a call originating from this number on my home office phone, no call received on my cell phone yet. Any response from the FCC? Time to get rid of these idiots.
Comment by Tony — October 20, 2005 @ 1:29 am
FCC responded with a boilerplate letter saying ‘thanks for telling us, but we don’t handle individual complaints, have a nice day’
Verizon said the same thing, but also reminded me that ‘we never stop working for you’.

I got this call f’kin call once a week, where no one talks in the other end. WTF.. did a reverse number, didn’t find anything. Googled..and found this. I work 3rd shift, and these a’holes call me when I’m sleeping. >=(
Comment by Joe from Lowell, MA — October 27, 2005 @ 11:37 am
If you listen to the message it says press a number to be removed from the list or press a different number for more info.
I pressed the remove from list and it still calls me once a week.
So finally I pressed the more info number and got someone on the other end. I asked to speak to a manager and they hung up on me. This happened again today but I stayed on the line. The weirdest thing…it never disconnected. The phone kept ringing to other lines, walmart, some dr. office, etc. People would answer but they couldn’t hear me, and then they would hang up and the process repeated, calling a different place over and over. It never stopped until I hung up.

Interestingly enough, I dialed 9 to get a person and asked them what company this was and then click hung up on. Next call office line, That call went line this:
Heather: Hello my name is Heather
ME: Hello Heather, we seem to have a problem here.
Heather: What is that?
I am on the national do not call list and this is the 3rd time in the past 2 weeks I have received calls.
Heather: Sorry, what numbers are being dialed?
ME: Number x and y
Heather: Ok I will make sure these numbers are taken out of the database.
ME: You do that. Thank you.

No this is not just another telemarketing call.
Its a FRAUD AND SCAM. after you press #9 regarding some trip you won to florida, they charge your card for $99.00 and nothing arrives. This has been going on since approx May 05 Its Decemember 05 and I got a call, so they are still in business to rip you off. Interesting how nothing can be done! Even with all these posts and others calling the FTC and their their phone companies, nobody has a solution. Nothing can be done. I wonder Why?

YES!! I want to help complain about this number (214)279-0090. I get calls from them on my cell phone and the worst part is, they call my Ottawa home business line and disturb me during my work. That really pisses me off! I also get annoying telemarketing calls from a 1-800 number. I’ll have to look up that number and let you all know about that one. Decided to go back on the comp and do a reverse lookup on white pages… what do ya know? They didn’t know anything either!
For some dumb reason, I decided to Google it (which I guess turned out to be a smart idea), and found this…

Received call today from “Card Services”. Asked for manager or supervisor and they hung up. Tried to return call but get fake “not in service message”. Filed complaint with National DNC.
Comment by JoeMcD — June 21, 2006 @ 8:24 pm
Received a call a little over an hour ago. This is a credit card scam. The “card services rep” will ask for credit card account information, then use it to make fraudulent charges to the account. They begin by asking if you have more than $2500 in total credit card debt and also ask if you have accounts with credit remaining. They will then ask for details to help them commit the fraud (account numbers, name, telephone number, numbers on the back of the card). They ask for an address so they can supposedly mail you some special offer. If you’re dumb enough, they’ll take info on as many cards as you give them. They drop off the line for a few minutes to “verify the account” and that is probably when they’re running new charges on the card.
So how do I know all that? I held on the line after they “hung up” (I asked to speak to a supervisor) and their goofy phone system put me into a pseudo-3-way call where I could hear everything the rep said, but could not hear the victim (no one could hear me). There were at least six or seven different people working the phones this evening, so it’s definitely a group endeavor. I burned an hour of their long distance, so I guess that’s an accomplishment of sorts.

Google works:(
1. My unlisted phone number in Chicago is also on Do Not Call list (Google searches still show prior owners of the number from before 09/05)
2. Caller ID showed 214-279-0990 (Dallas, TX)
3. Recorded message was about credit card rate in the 6.whatevers % “but tonight only” type statement
4. Selected 9 to hear the BS.
5. Actually got nice young guy - I indicated I was already p****d off, because it didn’t even say what credit card of mine it related to (which bypasses DNC laws, I believe)
6. He indicated that they were a separate company, at which point I indicated that they had violated the DNC list.
7. I also asked what the name of the *company* was. He put me on hold and apparently asked someone what he should tell me: Account Ledger Solutions (does have a website per Google, but an 877- contact us number).
8. He asked my number to remove it from the list.
9. I indicated that I would be reporting the company for breaking the law.
10. I called the 214 number on Caller ID and got this recording, “Sorry - the tollfree number that you have called has been disconnected”. NOTE: Area code 214 is *not* tollfree!
FYI - I am also being told that foreign recruiters can also route through US phone exchanges to “appear” that they are in the US.
I could spend every waking hour reporting scams/ripoffs!

Andy Rooney’s Tips for Telemarketers:
Three Little Words That Work !!
(1)The three little words are: “Hold On, Please…”
Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would
make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.
Then when you eventually hear the phone company’s “beep-beep-beep” tone, you know it’s time to go back
and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task.
These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting.
(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?
This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a
person answers the phone.
This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a “real” sales person to call back and get
someone at home.
What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your #
button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it
kicks your number out of their system.
Since doing this, my phone calls have decreased dramatically.

Edmonton Canada, getting calls at least once per day from these guys. They also are now using an UNLISTED number that shows up as unknown name / unknown number on the call display. They called with the unknown number and 20 minutes later they called on the texas 214 number. Getting quite annoying.
Comment by Hawk — July 7, 2006 @ 7:56 pm
Instead, try this, when you push the button for more information, when they answer and ask if they can help you with your vacation, credit card balance, etc. Tell them yes, by all means please, let them speak for a moment, taking down the company information, and then ask if you can just speak to the manager to verify some information first before going ahead with accepting the offer. The manager will promptly come, and tell them to remove your number from the calling list as they are in violation if the FCC rules governing telemarketing service. If you’ve taken down the name of the company, this would be a good time to say that name, as well as the managers name if you remembered to catch it.

I answered the call from this number. They identified themselves as Card members Associates and were selling discount mortgages. Very rude women hung up when I asked questions. A better solution would have bee to ask what her number was. The originating number does not function.

Got this call in Mississippi, and after a little research found there are many incarnations of this company and its scams. Check out “Account Ledger Solutions” and the 800 number “800-361-4140″ given to me by their rep to see more. (Google pulls up quite a history.) DNC registry has worked very well for me over time, but can’t protect against random dialers.

Got the same call 10 minutes ago, I’m in Ireland. Rang my Telecom provider and they said I’m off the list. They told me to ring some agency here which I did. I said about the call telling me I’d won a cruise and just before I said anymore the operator said ….press 9 yeah I know that one! He said when they ring again press 9 and tell the operator I’ve no credit card and that’ll stop them!
